Peter Buckley is the Oregon State Representative for District Five, covering Ashland, Talent, Phoenix, Jacksonville and a small portion of west Medford. A 1979 graduate of the University of Santa Clara, he began his professional life as an actor, writer and director in west coast regional theatres, then went on to serve as Artistic Director of the Ferndale Repertory Theatre and as the director of the actor training program for the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre. Peter moved to Ashland in 1997 to be with his wife, Joan Langley, the education director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and raise their three sons. After moving to Ashland, he served as a consultant for Dell'Arte International, helping to develop the first MFA program in Physical Theatre in the U.S. In addition to his work in theatre, Peter presented weekly commentary on NPR stations from 1987 to 2002, including five years on Jefferson Public Radio. Peter began his political work in his early teens, at about the same time as he began his theatrical work, volunteering on local and national campaigns. After the election in 2000, Peter decided he had to take an even more active role, and he stepped up to be the Democratic candidate for Congress in District 2 in 2002, and won election to the Oregon House in 2004. He was voted by his colleagues to become Assistant Democratic Leader in 2005, was named chair of the House Education Committee in 2007, and was elected House Majority Whip last year as well. He has played a leading role in the recent progress made by the Legislature in education, health care, civil rights, innovative economic development and care for the disabled.
